10 Batters who can attract big bids at IPL 2023 auction

The Indian Premier League (IPL) auction for the 2023 season is just around the corner. Kochi will host the much-anticipated event on December 23. The marquee event will present a golden opportunity for all ten franchises to upgrade themselves specially on batter.

Before, franchises have not shied away from breaking the bank to sign players who are match-winners. Fans witnessed a bidding war between teams at the 2022 mega auction to acquire the services of gun-batters such as Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer. Teams are expected to sign many top-tier batters at the upcoming auction.

The following batters are likely to attract big bids at the IPL 2023 auction:

10. Samarth Vyas

In Saurashtra’s cricketing circles, Samarth Vyas is one of the most exciting prospects. The 27-year-old has played 40 List-A games and scored 1353 runs at a strike rate of 94.28. In the shortest format, he scored 649 runs in 28 games at a strike rate of 150.58.

Samarth smashed 314 runs in seven games at an impressive strike rate of 177.40 in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022. In the T20 tournament, he helped Saurashtra reach the knockout stages. In nine games at the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022, the ace batter scored 431 runs at a strike rate of 108.83.

Right from the start, the Rajkot-born can take the fight to the opposition. In addition, he offers versatility to the team by being able to play both in the top order and middle order. Samarth can therefore be a useful asset for many franchises in the coming season.

9. Narayan Jagadeesan

Jagadeesan has proven himself in the Indian domestic circuit. The wicketkeeper-batter has played 51 games in the shortest format and scored 1064 runs at a strike rate of 118.61. In the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, he has taken the Indian domestic circuit by storm.

In just eight games, Jagadeesan scored 830 runs at a strike rate of 125.37. As a result, he became the first player in history to score five consecutive List-A centuries. It was in the game against Arunachal Pradesh that he scored 277 runs in just 141 deliveries that he completely dismantled the opposition.

In the 16th edition of the lucrative Twenty20 tournament, Tamil Nadu batter scored 40 runs in two games at a strike rate of 108.11. As a result, Chennai Super Kings moved past him. With Jagdeesan in such good form, franchises may go all guns blazing to secure him at the upcoming auction.

8. Manish Pandey

In the Indian Premier League, Manish Pandey has been a run bank. Since its inaugural edition in 2008, the 33-year-old has amassed 3648 runs in 160 matches at a strike rate of 121.52. In 39 T20Is, he has scored 709 runs at a strike rate of 126.15.

Lucknow Super Giants signed the Indian batter for the 2022 season. Manish did not perform up to expectations and managed only 88 runs in six games at a strike rate of 110. Lucknow decided not to retain the Nanital-born player after his poor performances. This means that the ace batter will be auctioned off at the IPL 2023 auction.

It is Manish who holds the innings together and plays the anchor role perfectly. Additionally, the elegant batter is a very good player of both pace and spin. In addition, he brings a wealth of experience to the table, so many franchises are eager to acquire him at the upcoming auction.

7. Harry Brook

Harry Brook is a prominent figure in the T20 circuit. In 99 games, the 23-year-old has amassed 2432 runs at a strike rate of 148.38.  With his swashbuckling stroke play, he was able to rack up 436 runs in 13 matches at a stunning strike rate of 163.90 during the T20 Blast 2022.

In T20Is, Brook scored 372 runs at a strike rate of 137.77 in 20 games. During the T20I series against Pakistan, Brook scored 238 runs at a staggering strike rate of 163.01.

There is nothing more fearless than the England batter, who can demolish even the best bowling attacks. At the upcoming auction, many IPL teams could target Brook’s flamboyant bat in the shortest format.

6. Dawid Malan

Dawid Malan has been an integral part of England’s batting wheel in the limited overs format. As the third batsman, the 35-year-old has been entrusted with guiding the innings, and he has done so flawlessly. In addition, he can switch gears quickly and demolish any bowling attack with his swashbuckling stroke play.

He has played 55 T20Is and scored 1748 runs at a strike rate of 135.71. He has also performed well in T20 leagues worldwide. In 290 T20 games, he has scored 7895 runs at a strike rate of 129.44.

With a strike rate of 166.81, the England batter smashed 377 runs in nine games at The Hundred 2022. Trent Rockets won their first title thanks to his batting exploits.

The Roehampton-born Malan is a match-winner with the bat, so many franchises may look to sign him at the upcoming player auction.

5. Evin Lewis

In addition to his power-hitting ability, Evin Lewis is a ferocious striker of the cricket ball. In 209 T20 games, he has scored 5766 runs at an excellent strike rate of 144.07. In 53 T20Is, he has scored 1465 runs at a strike rate of 151.97.

Lewis was selected by the Lucknow Super Giants at the 2022 mega auction to bolster their batting lineup. Against Chennai Super Kings, the West Indies batter scored 55 runs off 23 balls.

In five games, the southpaw scored only 18 runs, including a match-winning knock. LSG released the ace batter ahead of the IPL 2023 auction because he did not fit into Lucknow’s plans.

On numerous occasions, Lewis has displayed his destructive stroke play in the cash-rich league. In the auction, any IPL franchise could raise their paddle to pick the Trinidad-born player.

4. Daryl Mitchell

Mitchell has been a consistent performer in T20 cricket. In 149 games, he has scored 3149 runs at a strike rate of 132.70. In 41 T20Is, he has scored 786 runs at a strike rate of 139.11.

For the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League, the 31-year-old was drafted by the Rajasthan Royals. Mitchell did not find a place in the playing XI for most of the season. In two chances, the Kiwi batter managed only 33 runs at a strike rate of 75.00. As a result, the Rajasthan franchise decided not to reinvest in him for the following season.

With experience at most positions ranging from one to seven, the flamboyant batter offers flexibility to any batting order. Moreover, Mitchell has been in superb form this calendar year, scoring 394 runs in 16 T20Is at a strike rate of 143.79. His ball skills are also impressive. Therefore, many IPL teams are likely to bid for him at the auction since he is an asset to any team.

3. Nicholas Pooran

Pooran has set the T20 circuit ablaze with his breathtaking knocks. During his 256 games in the shortest format, the swashbuckling batter scored 4942 runs at a dazzling strike rate of 141.15.

The 27-year-old was selected by Sunrisers Hyderabad at the 2022 mega auction for INR 10.75 crore. In his first season with SRH, Pooran smashed 306 runs at a strike rate of 144.34. Hyderabad decided not to spend a whopping sum on the wicketkeeper-batter for another season and released him ahead of the auction.

In the lucrative T20 tournament, Pooran has demonstrated his game-changing abilities in a matter of a few deliveries. IPL franchises may go hammer and tongs to sign the Trinidadian at the auction, as his inclusion adds firepower to a batting line-up.

2. Kane Williamson

Williamson has been a pillar of New Zealand’s batting line-up for over a decade and has amassed a truckload of runs. The 32-year-old provides stability to the batting line-up and has scored 2464 runs in 87 T20I matches at a strike rate of 123.01.

In the IPL, the New Zealand skipper scored 2101 runs in 76 games at a strike rate of 126.03. Sunrisers Hyderabad retained Williamson for the 2022 season for INR 14 crores. Despite this, the veteran batter was unable to score 216 runs in 13 games at a strike rate of 93.51.

Having failed to justify his price tag, Hyderabad management decided to part ways with the Tauranga-born. At the IPL 2023 auction, Williamson will go under the hammer.

In addition to playing the anchor role beautifully, the ace batter is capable of taking apart bowling attacks. At the auction, he could therefore attract big bids. Moreover, his shrewd leadership skills have been demonstrated time and time again and he is an astute tactician. It is therefore possible for certain franchises seeking a leader to include the Kiwi cricketer in their squad.

1. Mayank Agarwal

Mayank Agarwal aggregated 5854 runs in 81 first-class matches in the Indian domestic circuit. During the IPL, the 31-year-old scored 2327 runs in 113 games at a strike rate of 134.28.

For the 15th edition of the lucrative T20 tournament, Punjab Kings retained Mayank for INR 12 crore. Despite his best efforts, the Indian batsman could only score 196 runs in 13 games at a strike rate of 122.50. Prior to the IPL 2023 auction, he was released by the Punjab franchise.

It is impossible to overshadow Mayank’s stellar performance in the cash-rich league, and his numbers speak for themselves. When the team is in trouble, he can steady the ship with his stroke play. At the upcoming auction, franchises may engage in a bidding war to sign the elegant batter.
