5 star cricketers who could retire from longer format after World Test Championship 2023

Test cricket has changed as a result of the World Test Championship (WTC). We now have a multi-nation tournament in the longest format of the game. Bilateral test series are no longer considered irrelevant.

As a result of the WTC, test cricket now has a two-year landscape in terms of selection. Selectors don’t invest in a particular cricketer if they don’t see him fit and playing after 2 years.

As the WTC cycle enters its final 6 months, we could be seeing the last of some well-known cricketers. After the WTC 2021-23 cycle, five cricketers may call time on their test careers.

Here are 5 Probable Cricketers who could retire from Test Cricket after WTC

5 Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Al Hasan has been Bangladesh’s standout batsman and bowler all season. Among the best sub-continent all-rounders, he is right up there. In the last two years, he hasn’t had a great time playing international cricket.

As a result of personal and other reasons, he has missed many games for Bangladesh. In the wake of Mominul Haque stepping down as captain, he has not been able to make much of an impact. The next WTC edition may see Bangladesh move on from Shakib.

4 Trent Boult

Boult is one of the best seamers the Blackcaps have ever produced. He has excelled in all formats and everywhere he has played as a bowler.

Boult is no longer a contracted player of New Zealand cricket after he requested to be released. Though NZC has not ruled out his selection, they have made it clear that contracted players will have priority over selection. He was released from his contract due to his participation in the T20 league. A formal retirement from the red-ball format is likely not far off.

3 James Anderson

James Anderson is one of the best seamers in the history of the game. In terms of longevity, no fast bowler has come close to Anderson. One day, Jimmy’s career will also come to an end, as all good things do!

After their Ashes debacle, England has had a terrible run in the WTC 2021-23 cycle. The team will think long-term next time and go back to the drawing board. Jofra Archer, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood and Sam Curran will be returning after extended injury breaks, allowing Anderson to hand over the mantle to the younger players.

With this WTC cycle coming to an end, the longest-serving seamer in test cricket history may call it quits.

2 David Warner

For nearly a decade, the Australian southpaw has been a dominant force at the top of the game. Despite not having a stable opening partner for most of his career, he has held the Australian top order together.

Warner, who is 36, has made it clear that he is in the last year of his test career. Despite already having one foot in the WTC finals, a dominant home season will be enough to book their tickets to The Oval in June 2023. Warner’s retirement will be perfectly timed if the Aussies win the WTC.

1 Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma has been a legend in limited-overs cricket, but has struggled in test cricket. It took him a long time to make his test debut in 2013. In his 9 years as a test cricketer, Rohit has been in and out of the side due to fitness issues, and only worn the test cap 45 times.

Since he is in the twilight of his career right now, becoming India’s test captain was always going to be a temporary solution. He has the chance to lead his side to the finals in the remaining six tests of India’s WTC campaign. By winning the World Test Championship, India will give their skipper a fitting farewell.
