Impact Player: Cricket is adding another umpiring signal to the 20 or so already in place. At IPL 2023, umpires will raise their arms to signal the introduction of Impact Player, a new concept that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) says will “add a new tactical/strategic dimension.”
The IPL’s latest season will add a few innovative dimensions to the ever evolving game of T20 with the new rule at the toss, where captains can declare their XI after flipping a coin.
“We’ll need to go through some permutations and see how it affects the balance of side,” says the head coach of a team.
BCCI said it will “maintain IPL’s position at the forefront of innovative cricket and continue the evolution of T20.”
In SA20, captains can choose their XI after the toss, as per BCCI mails to franchises. The captains used to announce the XI before the toss. There’s also an expansion of the DRS scope to include no balls and wide balls. According to the playing conditions, a player can also challenge an on-field umpire’s decision regarding wide or no ball.
Impact Player is the biggest change this IPL. Here’s how it works. “The captain will nominate the Impact Player to the umpire, and the umpire will signal in the manner seen above to indicate that the Impact Player will be introduced,” says BCCI.
There’s a way to introduce the Impact Player: (i) before the start of the innings; (ii) after each over; or (iii) if the batter falls of the wicket or retires during the over (see Clause 1.8 (iv) below). If the wicket falls mid-over, the bowling team can get an Impact Player, but if the wicket falls mid-over, that Impact Player won’t be allowed to bowl the remaining balls.”
New Toss Rules
BCCI says: “Today, captains have to change teams before the toss, but that’s changed to exchange teams right after the toss, so teams can pick their best 11 based on whether they’re batting or bowling first.” Teams can also use it to plan for impact players.”
There are two team sheets for each captain.
If they bat first, playing XI and 5 subs.
If they bowl first, playing an XI and five subs.
After the toss, the captains will exchange team sheets.
Impact Player Rules
At the toss, teams have to identify their playing XI and five substitutes. One player can be an Impact Player out of the substitutes listed on the team sheet.
Each team can use one Impact Player. It’s not mandatory, though. Impact Player is up to teams.
The BCCI clarified that a player replaced by an Impact Player (“Replaced Player”) can’t take part in the remainder of the match and can’t even return as a substitute fielder.
If a player gets injured while fielding mid over, the injured player can’t play in the match if Impact Player replaces him. Otherwise, Impact Player can only be introduced this way.
Cricbuzz reported earlier that the Impact Player can only be an Indian if there are less than four overseas players.
When a team nominates less than four overseas players in the starting XI, an overseas player can be used as an Impact Player. Impact Players can only be overseas players who are part of five substitutes on the team sheet. In a match, if an overseas player is introduced as an Impact Player, a fifth overseas player can’t play.
At the fall of the wicket or when a batter retires during an over or at the innings break, only the captain can notify the on-field umpire or the fourth umpire about the introduction of the Impact Player.
A player can now bat and bowl a full allotment of 4 overs in an uninterrupted innings after Impact Player was introduced.
