India Can Win T20 World Cup: Mahela jayawardene thinks India can still do well in the T20 World Cup, even though they didn’t do well in the Asia Cup and lost a key all-rounder to an injury. India picked their 15-person team earlier this week, but Ravindra Jadeja wasn’t on it. His injury at the Asia Cup is a tough blow.
Jadeja gave the India XI the balance it needed by both bowling well and hitting hard with his left hand. And jayawardene said that one of the early tournament favorites will be hurt a lot by him not being there.
jayawardene told The ICC Review’s Sanjana Ganesan
“It’s a hard thing to do. They had put him in that No. 5 role well. He has been doing a great job with the bat, and having him and Hardik Pandya in the top six, two guys who can do everything, gave India a lot more options in the batting order “jayawardene told The ICC Review’s Sanjana Ganesan.
“It’s a tough one for them, and not having that left-hander is probably a worry. They’re now leaving Dinesh Karthik off the team and putting Rishabh Pant in his place to bat at 5 or 4. They need to work out these issues before the World Cup. But losing Jadeja in the shape he was in will be a huge setback for them.
Virat Kohli is back to his old self
Even though it’s a big setback, India still has a lot to look forward to and can take comfort in the fact that their best batter, Virat Kohli, is back to his old self. The 33-year-old stopped playing cricket for a month to work on his mental health. He came back to the Asia Cup with all guns blazing.
Kohli got his 71st international hundred when he hit an unbeaten 122 against Afghanistan. Before that, he hadn’t hit a hundred in 1,020 days. He finished the tournament with 276 runs at an impressive 92 and a strike rate of 147.59. This made him the second player with the most runs.
According to Mahela jayawardene India Can Win T20 World Cup:
“He was pretty close to where he was,” jayawardene said. “He just didn’t have that big score under his belt to feel confident, which is always going to happen in white-ball cricket.” In the past year, there were a few worries about people getting hurt. He had little aches and pains, so they let him rest. India kept letting people rest, even though they had a lot of work to do. So it’s also hard because the run isn’t always the same.
“He batted well in the Asia Cup and showed what he can do, especially in that position. Going forward, it will be a worry for the other team that India has a stable lineup and is confident that a player like Virat will make a difference.
jayawardene also said that India would get a boost
“It’s great that he’s hitting like that. In a World Cup, we need all of these great players to be at their best, and that’s what the World Cup deserves, too. At that level, everyone was going after each other. The World Cup in Australia will be a lot of fun to watch”. jayawardene also said that India would get a boost when fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah got back into shape. “For me, everything is there: the way they played, their skills, and their talent. “All they need is a little more confidence with the bat, the ball, and in the field,” jayawardene said.
“India will want to get better at these little things. It’s just that bowlers need to be sure they can get wickets and then show off their skills. Jasprit wasn’t there, so that was also a factor. He helps them in a big way with the new ball and at the back. When he goes back to Australia, that will also make them happy. “World Cups are all about momentum and playing your best cricket at the right time. So, as long as India’s players step up their game to that level, I think they can do it.”
