With the IPL mini-auction for the 2023 season just a few weeks away, the franchises have taken a closer look at the domestic tournaments, including the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy.
As many as 90 players have been released across ten teams ahead of the auction, creating some crucial voids. Thus, all franchises will be looking at numerous Indian players currently sharpening their skills at home. IPL could provide a great platform for budding talent to break into international cricket in the past.
All that said, let’s take a look at five domestic players who might spark a bidding war at the upcoming Kochi mini-auction.
5. KS Bharat
KS Bharat has been traveling with the Indian Test squad for a while as a backup option behind the stumps. However, the wicketkeeper-batter has not yet made his international debut. Having played for the Andhra Pradesh side, the 29-year-old has extensive domestic cricket experience.
During the 2021 season, Bharat played a few IPL games for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Delhi Capitals picked him up at the IPL 2022 mega auction for INR 2 crore, but he never played. The franchise recently released him, which came as a surprise.
Bharat has played ten IPL games so far, scoring 199 runs at 28.4 and a decent strike rate of 122.09. Teams such as Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders may be interested in him.
4. Shivam Mavi
Shivam Mavi was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for a whopping INR 7.25 crore at the IPL 2022 mega auction. On his day, the former Indian U-19 cricketer can swing the ball up front at good pace and be lethal.
In the six games Mavi played in IPL 2022, he scored more than ten runs an over and picked up just five wickets. However, the Uttar Pradesh lad is expected to create a bidding war among the franchises after KKR released him ahead of the mini-auction.
In the auctions, Indian fast bowlers are always in high demand, and Mavi is expected to command a high price yet again.
3. Samarth Vyas
Recently, Samarth Vyas became the fifth batter to reach a double century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and he has been in great form. As a consistent run-scorer in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the Saurashtra batter had a strike rate of over 170.
With his ability to hit maximums consistently, Vyas can play a key role in the middle order. Scouts have been looking for talents like Vyas, and the fact that he scores a high percentage of his runs through boundaries could work in his favor.
Given his recent impact, franchises like Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad have a lot of slots to fill.
2. Rahul Shukla
Rahul Shukla made his IPL debut ten years ago, but the Jharkhand pacer is still going strong in the domestic circuit. Known for his pace and bounce, he was a part of the Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, and Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) squads back in the day.
From 2012 to 2014, Shukla played just seven games up front. After bagging 16 scalps in seven matches with two five-wicket hauls in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022, the right-arm quick has now brought his career back on track.
Shukla has been a regular in the Jharkhand squad for years now and has finally found his groove. A lot of franchises might be interested in his impressive numbers this year, resulting in a bidding war.
1. Narayan Jagadeesan
After his phenomenal performance in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022 season, Narayan Jagadeesan might end up among the most sought after players at the IPL 2023 auction. The 26-year-old was released by the Chennai Super Kings franchise after playing just seven games since IPL 2020.
Recently, the Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper-batsman smashed a phenomenal double ton against Arunachal Pradesh in List A cricket. The 277 runs he scored off just 141 balls comprised 25 fours and 15 sixes, making it the highest individual score in List A cricket worldwide.
He is also leading the runs chart (Vijay Hazare Trophy 2022) by a huge margin after hitting five consecutive tons. The fact that he can perform wicketkeeping duties as well as open the innings makes him a top priority for a lot of teams.
