Pakistan qualifies for semi-finals with plenty of positives
Babar Azam’s side had everything go exactly as they planned to clinch an unlikely semi-final berth as they clinched what looked to be an unlikely spot.
Following the Netherlands’ stunning victory over South Africa earlier in the day, Pakistan’s match against Bangladesh became a virtual quarter-final and kept everyone on the edge of their seats until the end.
Despite some wobbles in Pakistan’s reply, Shaheen Afridi returned to his brilliant best with impressive figures of 4/22 at Adelaide Oval. Bangladesh managed just 127/8 in good batting conditions.
Babar and Rizwan have finally formed a decent partnership
In T20I cricket, Babar (25) and Mohammad Rizwan (32) are arguably the best opening pair, but neither player had done much at the World Cup until Sunday.
When both wickets were removed in quick succession as Bangladesh found a glimmer of hope, Pakistan looked set for an easy victory.
As nerves began to set in for Babar’s talented team, Litton Das threw down the stumps of Mohammad Nawaz to send him packing.
Bangladesh’s campaign ended there, while Pakistan’s continued on to the semi-finals.
An emotional Shakib misses a golden opportunity for Bangladesh
Shakib was frustrated throughout much of Sunday’s match, which began when he was given out lbw for a golden duck in the middle of Bangladesh’s batting powerplay.
Bangladesh’s experienced captain was given out LBW first ball by South Africa umpire Adrian Holdstock, and he immediately requested a review, believing the ball had edged onto his pad.
In Pakistan’s innings, Shakib was unable to review an LBW decision against Nawaz because time had elapsed by the time the TV umpire confirmed the onfield decision.
Though it wasn’t meant to be for Shakib or Bangladesh, the Asian team can be proud of their performance.
