T20 World Cup 2024: Everything You Know About The ‘New’ World Cup Format

The T20 World Cup 2024 is anticipated to be an exciting and awaited tournament in the cricket world due to its new location and format. The next T20 World Cup is expected to feature a series of crisp moments and historic scenes.

As hosts of the 2024 T20 World Cup, the United States of America and the West Indies have automatically qualified.

The 20-team tournament in 2024 will be played in two phases before the knockout rounds. The format will be different from the First Round and Super 12 stages of the T20 World Cup 2022.

There will be four groups of five teams each. Top two teams from each of the four groups will qualify for the Super Eight stage, where eight teams will again be divided into two groups of four each. In the semi-finals of the tournament, the top two teams from each group will compete.

To qualify for the tournament, 20 teams must be selected. The next 10 teams will be determined by the performances at the T20 World Cup 2022 and the ICC T20I rankings cut-off on November 14.

The top eight teams in each of the two groups in the Super 12 qualified for the 2024 T20 World Cup. New Zealand, England, Australia, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, South Africa, and the Netherlands are the eight teams. The next-best teams in the ICC T20I rankings were Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

Regional qualifiers will determine the final eight spots in the 2024 World Cup. The Americas and East-Asia Pacific regions will each have one qualification spot, while Africa, Asia and Europe will each have two.

The Americas and East-Asia Pacific regions will each have one qualification spot, while Africa, Asia, and Europe each have two.

Breaking down each region

Africa

Regional qualifying spots: two

Zimbabwe failed to capitalise on their strong start to the campaign, finishing last in the Super 12 group to be relegated to regional qualification. They are joined by Namibia, who failed to advance past the First Round of the tournament, but they are short-priced favourites to return in 2024 by taking the two spots from the Africa Qualifier.

However, recent history suggests the sides will face a tough task in a region with a wide array of talent.

Despite the fact that Uganda upset Namibia in a recent T20I series, even the men known as the Cricket Cranes lost a one-run thriller to Kenya during recent African qualifying for 2022.

Across the region, U19 success suggests senior parity will follow. Tanzania have the reputation of causing upsets, most recently against Namibia in qualifying for the 2022 U19 World Cup. Nigeria’s U19 World Cup contingent is likely to make up the bulk of Tanzania’s squad.

America

Regional qualifying spots: one

Despite their disappointing performance at the A Qualifier, Canada are early favorites to claim the Americas’ spot, which ultimately belongs to them due to the USA’s automatic qualification.

Bermuda, fellow competitors at the 2019 Global Qualifier, will be the most likely challenger for the spot, having overcome the USA in a Super Over.

Asia

Regional qualifying spots: two

It’s hard to predict the two spots in the Asia region for 2024, as several teams are in the running.

On paper, UAE edge Nepal and Oman, and Singapore, Hong Kong, Bahrain, Qatar, and Malaysia can all upset the larger teams.

As part of the 2022 event, UAE had the opportunity to qualify automatically, but failed to progress to the Super 12 stage.

East Asia-Pacific

Regional qualifying spots: one

As one of the highlights of the 2021 T20 World Cup, Papua New Guinea has a theoretically easier run in the cycle for 2024, with an automatic spot for the top East Asia-Pacific team.

As winners of the Sub-Regional A Qualifier earlier in the year, Vanuatu would likely pose the biggest threat to the Barramundis, while the Philippines, fresh from their appearance in the Global Qualifier A for the 2022 tournament, are sure to make an impact.

At next year’s regional qualifier, Japan, the winner of Sub-Regional Qualifier B, will also participate.

Europe

Regional qualifying spots: two

The butterfly effect of Netherlands’ shock victory over South Africa during the 2022 T20 World Cup is positive for the European region.

By finishing in the top eight in Australia, Scott Edwards’ team has already qualified for 2024, easing qualification for the rest of the continent.

In what is a booming cricket region, emerging teams will likely challenge the well-established sides. Despite the case for the three Sub-Regional winners: Italy, Austria and Denmark, Jersey and an improved Germany are the biggest threats to overthrow Scotland and Ireland.

Austria beat Guernsey and Norway in late July to stun their Sub-Regional group, and Italy and Denmark also impressed.
