The IPL 2023 Auction Date, Rules and Trading Window

IPL 2023 Auction: In March 2023, the Indian Premier League will have its next edition, one of the most anticipated sporting events in the world. IPL fans and franchises alike are eagerly awaiting the auction in 2023. Gujarat Titans, led by Hardik Pandya, defeated Rajasthan Royals in Ahmedabad to win their maiden IPL title in the previous edition.

The humongous media rights deal IPL received should be discussed while we are discussing the IPL 2023 auction date. As a result of the media rights deal for the 2023-2027 seasons, the IPL has gained a lot of attention. The BCCI will receive staggering Rs 48,390.50 Crores, which includes 23,575 Crores in TV rights deal with Disney Star and 20,500 Crores in digital rights deal with Viacom 18. This time around, the excitement about the IPL 2023 auction date is unlike anything else.

In preparation for the next edition, preparations have already begun. Players to be released or traded in the IPL auction 2023 are being prepared by franchises. As part of IPL 2023 auction, they are also looking for new players to fill the team’s loopholes.

The following sections will discuss the IPL 2023 auction date, the trading window, and other important details.

IPL 2023 Auction Date

Due to the two new teams, we already saw mega auctions before IPL 2022, so IPL 2023 would be a mini-event. It has not been officially announced when the IPL 2023 auction will take place, but it is expected to take place either in December this year or early next year. Prior to the mini-auction, probably around November or December, we’ll see a trading event where players can change franchises. Watch this space for more information on the IPL 2023 auction.

Here are the 10 teams participating in IPL 2023.

All the franchises will benefit from this auction round, especially those that finished in the bottom half of the points table such as MI, CSK, SRH, KKR, and PBKS. Both the auction and the trade window are just what they’re looking forward to in order to release poor performers and trade-in or purchase promising players within their budgets. Let’s take a look at the IPL trading window as we await the IPL 2023 auction date.

IPL 2023 trading window

BCCI will open a trade window towards the end of the year before franchises clash in the auction. Franchises can trade players among themselves through the trading window.

In the upcoming trading window, players like Ravindra Jadeja (CSK), Tymal Mills (MI), Adam Milne (CSK), Manish Pandey (LSG), Vijay Shankar (GT), and Shahrukh Khan (PBKS) are most likely to be traded.

Player Retention in IPL 2023 Auction

A key aspect of the IPL is how franchises compete for promising batters, bowlers, or all-rounders, while backing their key performers and loyal players to retain them. The celebrated captain of CSK, MS Dhoni, has become synonymous with the team name for some franchises. The same is true for RCB and Virat Kohli, Mumbai Indians, and Rohit Sharma.

Here is a list of players likely to be retained by all IPL teams.

1. Gujrat Titans

The GT team will continue to be led by Hardik Pandya after winning their maiden title. Rashid Khan, David Miller, Shubhman Gill, and Mohammed Shami may also be retained by GT along with him.

2. Mumbai Indians

MI should retain captain Rohit Sharma. In addition, MI will retain Jaspreet Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, and Daniel Sams. Whether they let Kieron Pollard go or play the Right to Match card for him will be interesting to see. As a spinner-allrounder, MI would try to sign Ravindra Jadeja.

3. Sunrisers Hyderabad

Kane Williamson continues to captain SRH as one of the most respected players. Rahul Tripathi, Umran Malik, and Abhishek Sharma will also be retained by SRH. If possible, they will also try to bring in Ravindra Jadeja as a good finisher.

4. Chennai Super Kings

Apart from MS Dhoni, CSK will retain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, and Deepak Chahar. The CSK might release or trade Ravindra Jadeja after his dismal performance as the captain during IPL 2022.

5. Kolkata Knight riders

Shreyas Iyer will continue to captain KKR. Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, and Varun Chakravarthy will also be retained. It is possible that Aaron Finch, Shivam Mavi, Sheldon Jackson, and Harshit Rana will not be retained.

6. Delhi Capitals

DC will continue to be led by Rishabh Pant. Other players to be retained include Prithvi Shaw, Axar Patel, David Warner, and Shradul Thakur. Mandeep Singh, Tim Seifert, and Lungi Ngidi might be let go.

7. Royal challengers Bangalore

Can we imagine RCB without Virat Kohli? In addition to Kohli and Faf du Plessis, RCB will retain Glenn Maxwell, Dinesh Karthik, Harshal Patel, and Wanindu Hasaranga.

8. Punjab Kings

In PBKS, Mayank Agarwal released and Arshdeep Singh joined, Shikhar Dhawan appointed as captain. Other teammates are Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Shahrukh Khan, and Kagiso Rabada. PBKS is looking for an experienced spinner and a finisher. In the event that Ravindra Jadeja is released or traded by CSK, they might be interested in him.

9. Rajasthan Royals

Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Prasidh Krishna will continue to provide services to RR.

10. Lucknow Super Giants

KL Rahul, Marcus Stoinis, Quinton de Kock, Jason Holder, and Krunal Pandya will retain their positions with the Super Giants.

Right to match card

BCCI introduced the Right to Match card for the 2018 IPL mega auction in order to add more excitement and fun to the event. A franchise can retain a player by matching the highest bid placed for him during the auction. In the previous IPL auction 2022 earlier this year, the RTM feature was skipped since two new teams were introduced.

The feature benefits both the player and the franchise if they believe the player is worthy enough to stay with the team. A well-used card can be extremely valuable.

Summary

The IPL is full of fun and excitement for the viewers, but a lot happens behind the scenes as well. During auctions, franchises need to make the right decisions – whether to purchase valuable players or release underperformers or overexpensive players. If a player is in high demand, they cannot help but bid heavily. Playing it well can lead to glory, but it’s a double-edged sword.
